Protect Against Spyware and Adware March 12th, 2010 + view all articles
Spyware and Adware, unlike Viruses, will not cause actual damage to your computer beyond slowing performance but this does not make them harmless.
- Spyware: Software that, without the permission or knowledge of the user, will send personal information to a third party.
- The information sent can range anywhere from what websites you've recently visited to usernames and passwords.
- Adware: This software displays advertisements on your computer, despite whether or not you're browsing the internet.
- A free program (freeware) may include adware. Be sure to read the license agreement before downloading.
- Never allow a program installation to run if you did not initiate the process. Pay careful attention to downloads and installation to be certain the only things on your computer are things you want.
- Installation of an anti-malware program, such as Trend Micro, can help protect against malicious software.
